Mark, serving his second term, sits on the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Ways and Means committees, and the Education Appropriations Subcommittee.

Mark Davitt was born in Winterset and grew up in Warren County. His father, Phil, was a farmer, railroad engineer, insurance representative, worked at Firestone, and co-owned and operated three flower shops.  He served in the Iowa House of Representatives.  His mother, Theo, was a homemaker and co-owned and operated the flower shops.

Mark graduated from Martensdale-St. Mary's High School and attended Southwestern Community College, Mankato State University and Simpson College.  After attending school, Mark worked on the family farm with his father and brothers.  Later he worked for the Rock Island Railroad before entering journalism.  He has served as the photo editor of the Ames Daily Tribune, and the managing editor and operations manager of the Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune.  He owned and was publisher and editor of the Diamond Trail News in the Lynnville-Sully area of Jasper County.  Mark has been a member of the South Dallas County Crewcut Cowboy Band for about 26 years.  He now owns a photography and communications consulting business, Davitt Photo Alliance.

Mark is married to Amy Duncan.  They have two children, Elizabeth, 9, and Duncan, 6.  Amy is a newspaper publisher for The Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune, The Altoona Herald and Mitchellville Index, The Ankeny Press-Citizen and The Ames Life and Times.  She serves on the Indianola Development Association, is a member of Rotary and has chaired the Warren County United Way fund drive.  They attend St. Thomas Catholic Church and Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola.

Mark has been active in many organizations.  He is a member of the Iowa Newspaper Association, National Press Photographers' Association, the Iowa Press Photographers Association, the American Society of Magazine Photographers, and Newspaper Guild of the Communications Workers of America. He has won awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association and Iowa Press Photographers for his photography.  At his church, he is a member of the Knights of Columbus.   In his community he has been a member of the Indianola Noon Lions and helps with church fundraising activities.  He was a member of the United Brotherhood of the Maintenance of Way, AFL-CIO, when he worked for the Rock Island Railroad.

Mark was elected to begin serving in the Iowa Legislature in 2002. In the Legislature, Mark fights for constituents ranging from kids just beginning school to adults in retirement. His lifelong ties to Warren County and belief in balance between rural areas, small towns, and growing communities help him represent the district.  Mark wants to see policies that help Warren County to plan, to grow and succeed but not at the loss of its small-town, and solid and growing community values.
